Youth Essay INTRODUCTION:The federal government of Canada fifteen years ago, in 1984, the Liberal party changed the Juvenile Delinquents Acts to the Youth Offenders Act to have a More human approach to the rights of young people before the law(Leschild and Jaffe, 8:1991). In the present such as Premier, Mike Harris, of Ontario wants the federal government of Canada to scrap the Young Offenders Act. In 1999, the same party that came up with the act is making majors changes to the act. This report will look at the young offenders act at the present time, look at why kids commit crime, what is being done to improve the act, what has the province done towards teenagers and also a look at the United Sates youth system. WHAT IS YOAThe YOA the Young Offenders Act, which replaced the 75 years old Juvenile Delinquents Act in 1984, came into effect because since the courts where acting in the best interest of the children, little attention was paid to the rights of the children (Dickinson et al, 1996: 403). This had to be changed because of the new Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom which was passed in 1982 stated that in section 15 that equality before the law without discrimination based on age (Dickinson and others, 1996:744). The changes that were made to the YOA were that age that a child under the age of 11 could not be held criminal responsible.While between the age of 12-17 he or she could be held partial criminal responsible. Once you reached the age of 18, an adult you were full criminally responsible (Dickinson, 404:1996). If a young offender is sent to court the detail of the crime may be published, but the young persons name or a young witness name could not be identified.The reason for this was for young people to have another chance in life if they screw up and also to protect a young persons identity especially a witness (Justice Canada, 19:1988). WHY DO KIDS COMMIT CRIME:Why do kids commit crime, they are many answers but are there any correct answers to that question. Andree Ruffo is a youth court judge in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. She believes that kids commit crime and have to appear in court because of expressing themselves or trying to tell someone that their something wrong with their life, or their needs are not being met. She also feels that parents have a lot of problems on their own as she stated that Many parents havent found themselves. So when it comes to giving to children, they have no time, their exhausted(Ruffo, 1:1994). While Marcia Kaye thinks that adolescents that turn to crimes or the street have faced sexual abuse and/or physical abuse. The total of all offence in 1985 was at 188,958 and by the year 1989 it had jumped to 225, 766 so an increase of 36,808 in just 4 years. A big suprise was in the rise in numbers of the Drug offence. In 1985, it was at 4,290 and in 1986 it jumped up to 4,767, but by the year 1989 it was at 4,253. In that 5 year period it decreased by 43 but at least it is a start in one area (Ruffo, 4,1994). But it is not really young people committing the crimes because a Canadian centre for judicial statistics stated that 16 and 17 year olds commit most of the crimes. For example in 1992-1994 there were 42 murders and 25 of them or 60 percent were committed by 16 and 17 years old. Another good example is aggravated assault, which in the same year 311 were committe d but 16 and 17 year olds committed 212, which was 68% of them. Another fact was that 50% of youths, 16 and 17 year olds that were charged, had pervious criminal histories, compared with the 14 and 15 yeas old with 42%, and the 12 and 13 years old with 25%. These states show that children as they grow could be repeat offenders. In 1992, 12 to 17 year olds who represent 7.5% of the population ( biblio ) committed 30 % of the crimes. Just to add to all this in a survey in the Ottawa area, showed that 21 percent of students carried weapons in school (Wilson-Smtih, 15: 1994).WHAT CHANGES ARE PROPOSED:In a Macleans magazine in 1994, an article named Under the Gun and it reads small letters Will the Liberals get tough on young offenders.It only took five years later, but 5 years ago Justice Minister Allan Rock stated that he agrees, but there have to be more effective deferments (Wilson-Smtih, 13:1994). In another article he stated that we are not going to tolerate violence by any age gro up(Steward, A1: 1994). It only took five years to introduce the recent changed to the YOA. Some of the changes include lowering the age of the young offenders from 14 to 12 years olds where kids would be tried as an adult from the court.Another change is that the media will be able to publish the names of all young offenders, 14 and older, which receive adult sentences from the court. Another big change to all this is that parents will now be at fault if their kids commit again under their supervision. Such offence will see the parents sentence to 2 years in jail instead of the 6 months. This should show that a message is being sent to the responsibility for a young offenders is serious commitment or and a fine up to two thousand dollars (Baglole, Internet: 1999). Some other changes are that victims would be allowed to see the young offender crime file and help in the deciding of the sentencing process. Youth would also be put right away on mandatory probation after being released f rom custody. The Justice Minister Anne McLellan said that she Took a more balanced approach(Ed-kidcrime, Internet: 1999) CHANGES TOWARDS TEENAGERS:A change is the provincial governments new Violence-free School Policy that came in effect in June of 1994. It is that when a child behaves poorly in school his record will follow him/her if we move from one school to another telling the principals about past behaviour of new students. The reason for all this is that Students must realise their actions will have consequences said the Former education and training minister David Cooke and he went on to say This is what we mean by zero tolerance. Another change is that if a report of a violent incident involving a student that is 12 or older, it must be reported to the police.The board is also required to keep track of all incidents and send the results to the education ministry on a yearly basis. Two of these, the Quartering Act and the Stamp Tax, brought uproar from the colonists. This act still allowed the king to tax the colonies, and he made full use of that fact. One year after passing the Declaratory Act, the king brought around the Townsend Act and put a tax on dead, paper, paint and tea, as these were the items most economically important to the colonists at the time. After much debate, all the taxes were revoked except for the one on tea.Nevertheless, the damage to the economy of New England was done, and the wealth of the country was declining rapidly, angering the colonists. The settlers in the colonies didnt agree with the British taking all of their hard-earned money, and so they were slowly building up to the American Revolution in retaliation. This led to the Boston Tea Party which was once again spear-headed by the Sons of Liberty. England ere very angry with the colonists destroying all their tea, and instead of giving the colonist what they wanted, they jacked-up the tax price on the tea and made them pay for what they had ruined. Once again the economy was dropping because all of the money was going to the British. With every act performed by the British that involved money, the colonists were becoming angrier with their mother country which caused them to strike back. The final acts made by the British were the real turn. These are known as the Intolerable Acts, and they are what finally brought the colonists to the Revolution. The Intolerable Acts are made up of several things done by the British, but the two that made the most impact were the ones that involved money.The British passed the Boston Port Bill which closed the port in Boston. This devastated the economy as the colonists could no longer import or export goods from one of their biggest ports. It caused inflation in prices and a riot within the colonies. Already angry with the British, the colonists now saw everything that England did as unforgivable and a reason to fight. School life

Every day seems never- ending. It feels like if we were at school a thousand hours instead of eight. Routine is heavy, always doing the same, waking up at 7 am then going to school at 8 am. After that we have to survive boring teachers and useless subjects for the next seven or eight hours with only a few breaks between them. Once we arrive home all we want to do is sleep. But no, we can ‘t, we got to do our homework.Teachers think we do not have enough at school so they give us work to do at home. It seems like a Joke. We have no time for our interests or hobbies such as arts like learning how to play an instrument, learning to paint or draw or whatever we want to do. Our schedule is full of things. Most of them have to do with school. All what I have said is what a student would say if I call him right now, but if he took some seconds to think, he would realize school give us lots of possibilities.Thanks to school is that we've got friends. Students often said things such as â€Å"Hey teachers, you know we have a social life, don ‘t you? † that ‘s that ‘s very rough, they (school) gave us the possibility of having a social life. Greek Independence

For centuries the Greek population was completely under the Ottoman rule. The Greeks’ independence from the Ottoman Turks in 1830 did not come without hardship and suffering. Several other countries including Russia and France took sides with Greece during this fight as they felt close and connected with their culture. A nine year war was fought which eventually resulted in the Greeks gaining independence from the Turks. During this time, the Greeks had to maintain high morale and a strong disposition to be as successful as they were in the end. The circumstances they were under were difficult and harsh. Many people felt as though Greece deserved to break away from the Ottoman Empire, but some believed that the Turkish rule was not too oppressing. Most people believed that the people of Greece had great character and deserved to be free from the brutality of the Ottoman Turks. They were seen as having strong will to be independent and worked together as a country to achieve that goal. Their culture still to this day is being represented in different forms of art, for example architecture. It’s been studied for years because it served as a foundation for several other countries and is being kept alive, as opposed to forgotten. One poet, Alexandros Kalphoglou, described the Greeks as being enlightened, educated, well-rounded people. He went on to say that they were very open to and accepting of other cultures. It’s not surprising that Kalphoglou would’ve felt this way because he was a Greek Christian and most likely would be proud of his own history (Doc 4). Similarly, Percy Shelley was also a poet who believed Greek culture was essential for all other cultures to grow. She, however, was an English romantic poet. It’d be expected for her to praise Greece because romantic poets were all for the Greek revolution and independence (Doc 7). These two weren’t the only people who shared the same point of view on the Greek Revolt. While still under the Ottoman rule, Greek citizens were treated unfairly and poorly. Their living conditions were unstable and were constantly in upheaval due to the massive rebellion. The entire revolution was sparked by the lack of support shown by the Turkish rulers toward the Greeks. The bright, upbeat, and beautiful presence of the Greek culture was robbed by the Turks according to Savary, a French scholar of Greek. As a person who most likely spent a majority of the time studying Greek history, he would be inclined to respect their culture (Doc 3). Sneyd Davis, an English writer, spoke of Athens being deteriorated and everything beautiful that once existed there, vanishing. The events of what happened to the Greeks under the Ottomans can be easily related to this poem because their pride in their past was diminished. Davis is another romantic poet so I would expect to see him pro-Greek revolution (Doc 1). A majority of people were pleased with the fact that Greece did gain its independence from the Ottoman Turkish Empire. They believed that Greeks should have their arts, language, and other forms of culture restored fully so that they could regain pride in themselves. People also thought that Greek revolution would result in more successful nations in the future, which would be based on Greek tradition. A pamphlet called Greek exiles described the rise of Greek ancestors as heroes in history. It talks about how the Ottomans may have once been at power, but years later they didn’t stand a chance against the Greeks (Doc 6). In regards to Mavrocordato, it was a strong act of courage for the Greeks to take their independence and basically create their own government starting with nothing. Basically, he says that they wanted and made peace for themselves, but worked hard to get to that point (Doc 10). In an engraving created in 1828, called Greece Sacrificed, Regnier has depicted a scene where the Turks are attacking the Greeks, but not very successfully due to the fact that the Greeks are holding their ground. They’re standing for what they believe in as strong-minded individuals with a common goal in mind (Doc 11). Although most would agree that the Greek revolution was a positive thing, there are some people that are on the complete opposite side of things. These people think that the Turkish reign was not too overbearing, and that the Greeks could’ve easily stayed under their control. A Turkish sultan named Mustapha III, in 1765 made orders very clear to the governor of northern Greece to try and stop the revolts being made by the Greeks. He went on to describe the problems that the Greek population had been causing such as robberies. He thought that the Greek revolution had caused more problems than it solved, and that it should’ve been stopped early. Because of the fact that he was a sultan of the Ottoman Empire I find it almost obvious that he was against the Greeks in their revolts. Mustapha wanted what was best for his nation and people (Doc 2). In Vahid’s opinion, a Turkish governor, the revolution of the Greeks was driven by what he calls ‘drunkards,’ meaning that he didn’t take the rebellions seriously. Again, being of Turkish government, he would favor the Ottoman side of things (Doc 9). During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Greece was driven to rebel against their previous rulers the Ottoman Turks. Their culture and everything they took pride in was meaningless in the Turks’ eyes. They felt they had to start a revolution to gain back the rights they deserved. During this revolt, they living conditions were not as good as they could’ve been. In fact they were difficult to deal with, but this had only been a small hurdle for the Greek population who was determined to gain independence. Nothing could stand in their way, as they were a fearless, courageous nation. Finally, after suffering through nine years of antagonizing war and treachery, the Greeks gained their independence from the Ottoman Turks and started to create a government as a unified country.

Through role play, I can deal with nervousness during difficult conversations. Thus dealing with nervousness will help me relax and built on confidence. Through role play, I am also able to gain self-experience that will assist me in being assertive as I will be able to believe in myself as an individual and develop aggressiveness. Practice will also help me in developing both verbal and non-verbal communication skills as through continuous practice I can evaluate myself and at the same time receive feedback from people thus leading to the development of better communication skills traits. Communication Issues That Require Development The two primary communication skills that need developments are practice and role play. Practice as a communication diagnosis needs to be continually developed so that it is in line with modern communication trends. Development of method should be influenced by globalization which has led to changes in technology and cultural modes of communication (Cornelissen, 2014). Roleplay should be developed to suit professional standards, and this is an implication that only experienced and qualified personnel should be allowed to mentor students on role play roles. People can gain better experience when trained by qualified personnel than nonprofessionals. My Recent Professional Interaction Recently, I was assigned the responsibility of representing my school in project presentation outside the country. This was a fulfilling opportunity for me to develop my talent in public speaking. Two months ago, I had the chance to work as a social worker at a hospital in my town. My roles involved counseling and dealing with other social issues reported by patients. Relations between My Professional Interactions and Communication Issues Requiring Development Through my professional interactions, I realized that practice still required development. For instance, during my project presentation, I had to be confidence and audible so that everyone would understand what I was explaining to them. This was made possible by continuous practice before presentation of the project. I also realize that I was not nervous as I had participated in a role practice. During my apprentice as a social worker, I had to exercise a high level of self-esteem and also to be tolerant with the patients as they were from different backgrounds. Understanding the patients and effective listening to their problems were my essential communication skills as I was playing the role of a professional social worker. Through the two interactions, I realize that personal communication development is crucial as it precipitates development of self-esteem, understanding, confidence and patience. Concepts of Practice Effective communication practice requires the application of various communication concepts. Best communication practices can help people even the most reluctant individuals to become better effective communicators. There are different concepts of practice in communication. Some of these concepts include; being relatable, use of emphasis to communicate key points, active listening, and customization of communication styles for each employee and ensuring audience comfortability. Other methods include asking questions before one speaks and being available. Being relatable as a communication practice requires an individual to be well acquainted with people that they work with or share a common goal. Some of the relatable actions that one can apply in developing effective communication skills are making exceptional efforts of getting to know your colleagues at a personal level (Gasparini, 2014). This may include engaging in informal chats or showing interests on their livelihood. Use of emphasis to communicate key point is an effective communication practice that enables the audience to realize the importance of the point being conveyed to them. This creates a better understanding and also increases self-esteem and confidence of audience as they can confidently apply what they have learned without fear. Emphasis is created through repetition of the main key points. A trainer can also use focus on certain key point by using them as slogans in events or any other relevant meeting places. Active listening is a strong communication practice as it sends a message of tolerance during a conversation. It is advisable for individuals to frequently listen to other people matters of concern even if they may look dull. Active listening enhances confidentiality and enables individuals to practice patience and tolerance. Customization of communication styles for each employee is an equity approach. This model of practice is based on the argument that workers or people that we interact with regularly are different from each other and we can therefore not use one approach in dealing with them (O'Sullivan Partridge, 2016). Ensuring audience comfortability, on the other hand, means using words and language that is best understood by audience and people associated with you during a communication pattern. Asking questions before one speaks is a communication practice that discourages assumptions and encourages awareness creation (Omilion-Hodge Baker, 2014). Role Play Activity Concepts Role play is a communication diagnostic tool that requires individuals to engage in a speaking activity. Effective communication is best developed when people can speak and express themselves (Light McNaughton, 2014). During a role play, an individual is expected to put themselves in someone else's shoe or fit into an imaginary situation. Theoretically, role play helps individuals develop self-confidence as they can get used to some awkward conversation through practice (Akey, 2016). Role play concepts can be both theoretical and practical. The useful concept of role play includes; acting and being an imaginary person (Barber et al. 2016). Acting is a role play idea where individuals put themselves in the shoes of someone else and try to portray behaviors of the persons. Role play is essential in helping an individual in developing high self-esteem and confidence. Through acting, individuals get an experience of easily doing things that they were not able to do before. For instance, through role play, people or even students can learn on how to express and defend themselves. Self-expression is one of the most important keys to winning a job interview or clients for business personnel. Acting as a role play is, therefore, an important tool for developing effective communication skills that can be used both formally and informally. Besides, putting yourself in other people shoes will enable me to practice tolerance and patience with other people. Tolerance and pati ence are key professional concepts required of every individual at the workplace or in any organization. Another role play concept is imaginary people, in this concept an individual practice on a behavior of fitting into someone shoes. Imaginary role play is most commonly used in schools to help students develop effective communication patterns. During the imaginary process, students are often allowed to take in the opinion of others. Some activities that students engage in during an imaginary process include debates and public speaking; these activities often help students in developing communication skills such as being audible, maintaining nonverbal conduct with people they are addressing and develop self-confidence. Role-play can also be developed through a theoretical situation concept. During this process, the use of functional language for various situations is often expressed and practiced through role play. For instance, arranging and distribution of important office documents to different stakeholders at their residence or workplace is an example of a role play by staff. Theoretically, it is agreed upon by psychologists that learning can best be improved when individuals especially the preschool children are involved in memorial and engaging activities. However, role play does not only apply to children but people of all ages. Roleplay should be encouraged because it is fun, allows people the chance to express themselves and broadens the reasonable relationship to include external relationships. Roles play also enable people to understand the consequences of their behaviors. Through role play, professionals can develop theoretical and practical approaches to dealing with conflicts as role play helps in identifying problem options and solutions. Role play is valuable as it allows people to make mistakes in a nonthreatening condition. This is because it permits people to test various solutions until they come up with a more appropriate solution (Baile Blatner, 2014). For instance, in schools students are given a chance to compete in public speaking through the different level. Due to motivation, most students often struggle to continuously update their presentation skills until they are convinced they have earned the best skills for presentation. Practice and role play as diagnostic communication tools requires implementation of effective techniques that will ensure that the tools are well developed and can be easily understood. The following are action plan methods for the diagnostic communication tools. As an action plan practice can be developed through various techniques. First practice can be developed through training. Training can either be through learning or through attending training workshops. For instance, one can practice effective communication skills but enroll for short courses programs whose aim is towards enhancing communication skills. Such course titles are Developing effective communication relations" and communication and public relations courses.' Undertaking such courses will enable people to acquire skills that are required when communicating. Achievement of effective communication skills through training and learning in an institution can be measured in several ways. One way is through making the students do both practical and theory in exams so as to test their understanding. The second way is through observing students daily interactions with others after the lessons and during the institutionally based programs. Another mode of active communication practice is to read articles and journals, watching and listening to sources that guide on the development of effective communication techniques. Continuous books reading habit enable individuals to gain knowledge and also to learn from others people achievements and mistakes (Fischer OConnor, 2014). People mainly students or employees at the workplace may decide to form a small group which can help them develop each other communication techniques. For example, during the group meeting, everyone should be allowed to participate so as to get an overview of the presentation quality after which a feedback should be realized. Feedback release enables people to identify their mistakes and come up with solutions to their issues. For instance, comments on poor presentation will push a worker or student in getting to know how a quality performance should be conducted. Over time, the person will be able to gain confidence in presentation due to awareness of the communication techniques. Success in these situations measured when an individual can present themselves in front of people without nervousness or fear of making mistakes. Role play can be developed through maintenance of personal journals whereby students keep detailed information of what they have learned pertaining certain actions on their journals. This will help the students to reflect on what they have learnt easily. Another mode of developing role play is through developing reading and research plan before they embark into any acting role activity. For instance, students, who want to learn on how to communicate to a large crowd should first consult different reading sources on the topic, summarize the information they get then act out for others. This will help them to easily remember what they have learned and also act as a point of emphasis (Luna, 2015). Reading of self-help books will also assist individuals in developing the imaginary process during a role play. Self-help books are meant to acquaint individuals with divergent ideas that will improve on their imaginary process. Role play can be measured by observing people actions and reactio n towards certain situations and on how people involved in a role play handle difficult communication processes. Both role play and practice requires an identification of mentors who will help individuals develop their desired effective communication techniques. In an institutional setting, the teacher is always the mentor while in a role play or during a training process the supervisor is always the mentor. Individuals may also decide o have personal, professional mentors who will help them develop their communication skills and guide them through various problem-solving techniques. References Akey, B.
